There has been a public outcry after a mural to celebrate diversity in Cardiff through football was vandalised.

The My City My Shirt mural, in the Butetown are of the city has been defaced with paint, which as been condemned by the community as “disgraceful”.

There are calls for South Wales Police to investigate the matter.

A fundraiser has been launched by Sarah Bowen on the GoFundMe website in order to repair the mural.

Sarah Bowen said: “Hi, we are raising funds to cover the cost of repainting Butetown’s magnificent, #MyCityMyShirt mural of Cardiff’s ‘Mona Lisa,’ the beautiful Maimuna Indjai, by @unifycreative_.

“The mural was created to celebrate the diverse communities that make Cardiff one of the oldest, multicultural city’s in the UK and promote positive conversation around racism in football. Unfortunately last week it was racially vandalised.

“It is hoped that we can collectively show, hatred has no place in our city and racism has no place in sport, by working together to raise funds and restore the art work for all to enjoy.”

‘Very disappointing’

Ben Johns said: “This really is very disappointing. I know that my colleagues @SWPCardiff will be doing all they can to identify the perpetrators. In the meantime, the community is pulling together to remediate.”

Shahinoor Alom said: “Just shows that hate attitudes exist here in the most ethically diverse region of Wales. A disgraceful act – the perpetrators should be identified and made an example of.

“This won’t stop us believing in achieving a Wales inclusive of all races and ethnicities!”

The WCVA said: “We’re shocked and saddened to see that the #MyCityMyShirt mural situated next to our offices in Cardiff Bay has been defaced. We will do everything we can to assist the police in regards to CCTV footage.”

Yes, one on James Street (the red Cardiff City one) and one on Quay Street (the yellow Cymru one).

Looking at the vandalism it would seem likely that the idiot perpetrator was also covered in white paint.

A pregnant African woman in a Cardiff city shirt. Haven’t we had enough of this kind of woke rubbish being forced upon us. It’s simply not a true reflection on communities in the UK. If I was African I’d feel embarrassed and bemused in how black persons are being used in this way to promote false ideals.
