Wales set to be ‘blocked’ from Junior Eurovision by ‘UK plan to return’

Erin Mai – Calon yn Curo – LIVE – Junior Eurovision 2019

Wales is set to be blocked from entering the Junior Eurovision by the UK’s planned return to the competition, it has been reported.

According to Eurovision IN the BBC plans to return to Junior Eurovision in 2023, 20 years after the first competition was held, when the UK did take part.

The UK has not competed since 2005, which has enabled Wales to enter. However, if the UK were to return, it is understood that it would be given priority by competition bosses, blocking Wales from entering.

Junior Eurovision Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl sparked rumours about the UK returning to the singing competition in December last year, during a press conference.

He told France TV and the EBU that the BBC was “close to joining” the contest.

Wales debuted in the competition in 2018, in Minsk, Belarus. Welsh singer Manw Lili Robin took to the stage to sing “Perta” after being selected through the Chwilio am Seren (Searching for a Star) programme which was broadcast on S4C.

Wales also participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019, which was held in Gliwice, Poland. Erin Mai performed “Calon yn Curo” after being selected through Chwilio am Seren to represent her country.

Wales did not take part in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

I welcome stories like this. They serve to demonstrate the true nature of our condition – as a conquered territory of England, invisible and irrelevant to the international community of nations.

Too often, we fall for the sop of the occasional sporting “international” – or Junior Eurovision (!) – to persuade ourselves that we are anything more.

More English, and it is English, “do as we say” diplomacy towards Wales. Our nation will never have representation with this backwards decision for obvious reasons. The “British” State is not satisfied by taking away our wishes & dreams as Welsh adults, now do the same to our children. And yes it’s only a Jnr Eurovision competition, but it’s all to do with symbolism. To deny a people their birthright. The right to represent your country. A good example is Glamorgan Cricket & ECB. If Welsh, play cricket, cannot represent the land of your father’s. Would English people be happy… Read more »

I have to agree with some of the earlier comments; Wales is perceived as a second class nation by our English neighbours, and, so to are our Celtic cousins who fall under the British umbrella. The media are the biggest culprits in this perception. You only have to wait for a competition where England and one or more of the other home nations are competing and the TV coverage tells it all. National prime time programmes rescheduled for English games while the other nations are lucky to get coverage on local channels or the radio. If this was any other… Read more »
