11% of people in Wales think they’ve already had the coronavirus, according to a survey by Public Health Wales.

679 Welsh residents aged 18 years and over were interviewed between 20th and 26th April for the survey. The full results can be read here.

Other results include:

  • 8% of those who reported thinking they had been infected said this had been confirmed with a test.
  • 12% of people also reported that someone close to them like a family member or friend has been seriously ill with coronavirus, a rise of 4% on the previous week.
  • 23% were very worried they could get the coronavirus, 33% moderately worried and 31% only a little.
  • 65% of those with children said they worried ‘a lot’ about their wellbeing, and 20% ‘a little’.

‘Positive’

The survey also revealed that 58% of people agree or strongly agree that the government is responding well to coronavirus, a fall of 1% on the previous week, although the number disagreeing or strongly disagreeing rose 5% to 26%.

However, the survey did not specify which government – Welsh or UK – it had in mind. Health is a devolved issue in Wales but some aspects of the coronavirus response have been coordinated by the UK Government.

Professor Mark Bellis, Director of Policy and International Health at Public Health Wales said: “Currently there is strong support across Wales for the actions taken to prevent the spread of the virus. During these measures, most people feel they have support from within their communities – an essential element for health and wellbeing during these challenging times.

“In fact, despite social distancing, many people are talking more than they usually would to family and friends and people in their communities, and this is really positive to hear.

“However, even though we are keeping in touch, nearly one in five people are worried a lot about their mental health and wellbeing, which indicates there is still more support needed.”

If the public think the government has responded well to this crisis I despair.

The government were not proactive enough at first, waiting for instructions from Westminster, who seem to have corked their juices over the Roche testing kits. Certainly, Gething’s been unfit for purpose, but Drakeford is doing his best with one hand tied behind his back. He responded well to the second-home invasion.
