1Bws scheme launches to simplify bus travel across the north of Wales

Passengers on a bus

A single ticket scheme that aims to simplify bus travel and encourage more people to use the network has been launched.

The 1Bws initiative allows passengers to travel throughout the north of Wales using a single ticket across multiple services and with no extra cost.

With an adult one-day ticket costing £5.70, it covers any journeys within the counties of Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey and Wrexham.

David Bithell, Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council, said: “This is a great initiative which we are very pleased to support. It will help encourage local people and visitors alike to use our extensive bus network.

“It’s an excellent example of the benefits of partnership working between local authorities, bus operators and Transport for Wales.

“This is the first time that we have been able to provide and promote a single one-day ticket available on all services and it is thanks to operators large and small for their commitment to improving access by bus.”

Frustration

Organisers say that confusions over ticketing and costs are major factors that deter many people from using bus transport.

With a variety of different operators, people are often unsure if tickets are valid across services and uncertain about how much a journey will cost.

Cllr Philip Evans, public transport champion for Conwy Council, said: “There are buses covering most of the region. It is possible to explore the North Wales Coast, Snowdonia, the Clwydian Range, the Dee Valley from the comfort of a bus in the knowledge that someone else is doing the driving and you are doing your bit for the environment.”

The 1Bws tickets are valid only on local services and do not include National Express or park and ride.

Adult tickets cost £5.70, children pay £3.70 and a family ticket costs £12.

Great idea to boost bus use. I remember a Rover ticket, back in the 1980s, which combined bus and rail travel in north and mid Wales. I think I got a train from Rhyl to Aberystwyth and bus from Aber to Cardigan for £3-50. As a Cardi I was quite impressed!

That is good. Meanwhile a Day NetworkRider in the south is £9. I stopped using buses because I got fed up with being ripped off.

Good news for Wales on general. We need more of this – and across transport modes. I take it that is the point of Transport For Cymru.

Fantastic idea. Hard to do when so many different companies hold franchises.
a capitalistic copy of the fantastic Rover ticket, from back in the day when we had a functioning and useful public transport system.
now if we can find a solution to capitalistic private companies providing just one bus per week to rural areas.
there is a so.union. It’s called renationalisation. But I think we’d need to free ourselves from UKBIN before we could get that done without interference from Westminster
