A People’s Vote campaign must promise to reform Europe, says Adam Price

A campaign to Remain in the EU can’t just be a campaign for the status quo, Adam Price will say today.

He will tell a 3,000 person strong People’s Vote rally in London’s Excel that the campaign must be for a “social, democratic, decentralized and diverse” Europe.

“A vote to remain has to be a vote to re-form, re-new and re-generate,” he will say. “It cannot be simply a vote for the Europe that is, but for the Europe that can be.”

Mr Price will also say that the pro-European movement’s position “cannot just be to Remain. Who wants to remain in poverty, in austerity and injustice? We must be the movement for change.”

In the run-up to Tuesday’s vote in Westminster on the Prime Minister’s Brexit Agreement, the Plaid Cymru leader will say that there is no majority for the Brexit options on offer.

“Mrs May wants us to abseil to a ledge half-way down where we spend the next ten years in a sleeping bag tethered to the cliff face,” he will say.

“Others want to recreate Boris Johnson’s famous zipwire moment but this time without the helmet, without the harness, even without the zipwire – just two plastic union jacks fluttering in our hands as we plummet to our destiny.

“There’s no majority for either of these.  Not in the House of Commons, not in the Welsh or Scottish Parliaments, nor among the people.

“In 2016 the question was based on a fantasy of false promises and contradictory demands. In 2019 it will be a real choice.

“We will win the argument not just because the facts are on our side, but because we have the better dream.

“For a new society, for a new politics, for a new Europe, a new Wales, a new England, a new world.”
