A five-month crowdfunder by the Abolish the Assembly Party only managed to raise £360 towards their election effort.

The party had set a starting £1000 goal for the fundraising campaign which began in October of last year, with regional coordinator Richard Taylor describing it as a “simple target” in an online video.

However, by the time it closed after five months it had only managed to raise 36% of their aim through the donations of 29 supporters, with the most generous giving £40 towards the cause.

A link to the crowdfunding page had been posted by party Leader Richard Suchorzewski, sitting Senedd Member Gareth Bennett, as well as at least three times by Richard Taylor, including in a video message.

Gareth Bennett’s message said: “The Abolish The Welsh Assembly Party needs your help to Stop Wales Sleepwalking Towards Independence!

“Please consider donating on our JustGiving page to help us fund leaflets and other campaign materials. Thank You.”

‘Help out’

In his message to supporters asking for financial assistance for the party, Richard Taylor said: “Right now, we need your help. We’ve set up a JustGiving page so that you can help us get some campaign materials together and some leaflets.

“And just the simple target of a thousand pounds. No contribution is too big or too small, whether it’s a £1, £2, £5 or even £10. I hope I can count on your support, not just on social media, but so that we can get together and get our message out there that we’re here to abolish the Welsh Assembly.

“Follow the link between this video and give what you can – we’d really, really appreciate it.”

He also posted a message on Twitter saying they needed the money to get leaflets printed: “I’d be really appreciative if you could help out.

“The amount is irrelevant, the important thing is that you’re showing your support.”

The small sum stands in stark contrast to the independence campaign YesCymru which in the same time frame increased its membership from 8,000 to 17,000.

The Welsh Assembly changed its name to Senedd Cymru / Welsh Parliament in May of last year.
