Adam Price says Vladmir Putin has ‘declared war on Ukraine’s right to exist as a nation’

Adam Price has said that Vladimir Putin has “declared war on Ukraine’s right to exist as a nation” and plans to ” extinguish a separate Ukrainian identity”.

The Plaid Cymru leader was speaking this morning after returning from the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. He and Wales’ Counsel General Mick Antoniw returned yesterday following advice that the security situation has deteriorated.

Russian forces launched a major military assault on Ukraine, with reports of missile strikes and explosions in major cities, this morning.

Adam Price said that the sight of a democratic country being invaded should “chill us and shock us into action”.

“Putin justifying his premeditated and unprovoked invasion of a European democracy – something Russia under his brutal regime clearly is not – by saying he is to ‘demilitarise and denazify’ Ukraine, is gaslighting at a global and horrific scale,” he said.

“We should be under no doubt this means Russia plans to arrest, murder Ukraine’s elected leaders, activists and all those who would oppose the extinguishing of a separate Ukrainian identity. Harrowing accounts I heard from families of those in occupied territories underlines this

“The sight of tanks invading a sovereign democratic European state, its capital shelled – a country by no means perfect but one like ours with competitive elections, independent newspapers, free trade unions, human rights campaigners – should chill us and shock us into action.

“Putin has declared war on Ukraine’s right to exist as a nation. But this is also a declaration of war against democracy itself. When lies were told in 1938 we believed them. When tanks rolled in 1956 and 1968 we did nothing. We cannot afford to make that same mistake again.”

Earlier Wales’ Counsel General Mick Antoniw, who visited Ukraine along with Adam Price, posted a video of an explosion in the country. His family is from Ukraine.

“Grim, grim news as Putin escalates invasion of Ukraine,” he said.

“All our thoughts and support should now be with the Ukrainian people who are taking up arms to defend their country. My personal thoughts with my family in Ukraine.

“Ukrainian forces recaptured town of Shchastia. Fighting in many places all over Ukraine. My cousin rang me say he will stay there to the end!”

That link is probably the other extreme in a war of lies between 2 or more power groups. Frankly Adam Price’s visit does him no credit at all. I could understand Antoniw’s emotional link to the land of his forefathers, but Adam wandered again into the field of posturing and virtue signaling which he should leave to likes of Boris and Truss. Maybe now he will find time to visit those communities in Wales who are being threatened by profiteering institutions who wish to permanently change the landscapes as they get set to fill their coffers with greenwashed funds. The… Read more »

He is lucky he left in time as ,commercial flights have stopped now. He could have joined the resistance and really be a man of action and not just words? Now, perhaps he will find time to do what he is paid for and look after the interests of his constituents?

Adam Price has defended international law and should be commended for doing so. Im proud to say Plaid Cymru is a internationalist party and has always spoken out in defence of human rights across the world and against illegal military actions. Was Ireland’s ambassador to the UN also ‘virtue signalling’ when she strongly condemned Putin’s disgraceful and unprovoked military assault on ukraine at the emergency security council meeting last night.

A website about as impartial on matter’s relating to Putin as his mouthpiece Russia Today, in fact many of those who work for that site are also employed by Russia Today. As well as promoting Putin’s propaganda that site is also infamous for promoting the Assad regime”s disgusting lies that the victims of poisonous gas attacks in the syrian civil war did it to themselves

Adam Price should be commended for speaking out in defence of international law. Plaid Cymru is an internationalist party and has a long and honourable tradition of opposing illegal military actions and showing solidarity with its victims.

The West are not innocent, but Eastern Europe also have legitimate concerns about Russia as well.

Blimey Putin’s infamous troll farms are working overtime today by the look of things. If Trump was still in the white house there wouldnt have been a murmur of protest about today’s appalling events in Ukraine. Its widely accepted, indeed the russia report showed, that the russian state interfered in the 2016 US Presidential election to the advantage of trump. As for ukraine joining Nato well today has shown exactly why Ukraine has sought the protection of Nato membership. But whether or not Ukraine joins Nato is a matter for the people of Ukraine thru the govt they democratically elected… Read more »

Trump achieved an unprecedented state of peace with Pyongyang. Which was unthinkable prior to his tenure. If Trump was in power now he would of undoubtedly pressured the West and Ukraine into accepting Putin’s demands that they agree to never ever join NATO. Instead we have a vegetable in the white house who is justifiably

seen and perceived as a weak leader.
Their are certain factors in this world that the West and lefties
such as yourself cannot influence.
One if them is the superpower that is Russia or China or even their puppet North Korea. Along with the utter poverty of Africa too as an example.
To intervene now within Ukraine would be akin to starting a thermonuclear war.
Don’t kid yourselves either that: “. ..Trump’s trolls…” would ever even contemplate commenting on this tabloid for mainly non welsh origin welsh language obsessives and @YesCymru delusional village idiots .
