‘All our work could count for nothing:’ Concerns about ‘irresponsible’ visitors in Ceredigion

A Councillor has expressed concerns about “completely irresponsible” visitors in Ceredigion after a number mingled on the prom of Aberystwyth over the weekend.

Mark Strong, a Town Councillor in Aberystwyth posted a picture on Twitter showing a number of motorbikes parked on the prom and a crowd of people.

He said that all the effort in the county would “count for nothing” if visitors did not behave more responsibly.

“It’s sad to see so many visitors to Aberystwyth have behaved so completely irresponsibly over the weekend,” Mark Strong said.

“Almost everyone has been extremely careful in Ceredigion but all the effort will count for nothing if this happens for the rest of the summer.

He later said that it was “really frustrating to see that many visitors to Aberystwyth ignored social distancing advice”.

“It’s nice to see people enjoy themselves, but not at cost to our and their safety. People in Ceredigion have mostly been so careful for months, then this!” he said.

 

‘Contact’

Ceredigion has so far seen the lowest numbers of coronavirus cases in the country with only 59 confirmed cases as of yesterday.

Ceredigion Council put in place a contact tracing system from the beginning of lockdown.

“In summary, when information on positive results about coronavirus reaches us, a member of our Public Protection team makes contact over the phone with the person who has tested positively in order to gather thorough information that includes identifying ‘close links’ to which they may have transmitted the virus”, a council announcement explained at the time.

“The information is collected and held securely on an online system which has been created specifically for the purpose of contact tracing. Contact is then made with close links to ensure that they are aware and are following tight guidelines for protecting themselves and their families and keeping them from spreading the virus further”.
