Almost a quarter in Wales think monarchy should end with the Queen, poll suggests

Almost a quarter of people in Wales think that the monarchy should end with the Queen, a new survey has suggested.

The poll by the think tank British Future found that with don’t knows removed 23% in Wales thought the monarchy should end at the end of the Queen’s reign.

However, the figure for Wales was lower than both Scotland and England, where 40% and 26% thought the same.

Support for the monarchy was also higher in Wales than elsewhere in the UK. With don’t knows removed, 70% in Wales thought it should continue ‘for the foreseeable future’ while 68% and 51% in England and Scotland thought the same.

The poll suggested that support for the Royals might dip over time however as only 47% of 18-24-year-olds across the UK wanted to keep the monarchy.

The survey was released in order to coincide with the four day Queen’s Jubilee on the weekend starting on 2 June.

73% of people in Wales and two-thirds across England said they were interested in the Jubilee. However, only 48% in Scotland showed a similar enthusiasm.

The findings are included in a forthcoming British Future report looking at how attitudes have changed in the 10 years since the last jubilee. Polling was carried out for the study by FocalData.

I know, I barely know a royalist. Did they ask Pembrokeshire, Powys or Monmouthshire only.

Another way of putting it would be’more than three quarters of the Welsh want to retain the monarchy’,it all depaends on your point of view but I think Prince Charles can relax about it.You also suggest that the monarchists will die out this is true, but young republicans can change into old monarchists.By the way,I am a lifelong Welsh Nationalist and thoroughly agnostic about the monarchy.

British Future just another “independent” London based think tank claiming charitable status, run by a Mr Katwala who appears to think everyone should claim their Englishness???

Some regular contributors to nation Cymru make the simple error of equating Monarchists to Elizabethans ( a term well used in Australia 🇦🇺 and New Zealand 🇳🇿 plus Canada 🇨🇦…….) The service and tolerance of this fine lady need to be acknowledged for their fortitude and success in a difficult role and at 97 she certainly has done her bit. As we near the conclusion of the second Elizabeth Age …..we need a national conversation in Wales as to direction, purpose and shape of our needs and aspirations for a Head of State. My own preference is for a directly… Read more »

In Australia the term Elizabethans is used in Gvt and society by most to indicate no wish to enter a Regency let alone a Carlo age …

I wonder how many English people living in Wales were asked this question and then included in the survey results.

Exactly. There’s a world of difference between a Cymro/Cymraes and somebody who just lives here.

A simple view Dewi – but just look at how many of those with our thoughts on Wales future – cannot get their ‘ OBEs etc fast enough or who flock to London to get them ….

You are of course 100% correct in what you say.Theres plenty of Dic Sion Dafydds around and I know a few myself unfortunately. I was just wondering what the actual result of the survey would be without any incomer input or influence.

I would worry more about the local Tammany Hall Labour place-men who just love ❤️ the current buggins turn for honours or the Plaid backing North West rural or Cardiff elite who speak with fork
Tongues on these matters.

Considering the equivalent numbers for England, it’s statistically likely that inclusion of ‘English’ people in this would have lowered rather than increased the number of respondents supporting the monarchy in Wales.

Ask most of these people why they want to retain the monarchy and the best argument they can come up with is tourism. Yet the entire basis for the supposed evidence for their value to tourism is the visitor numbers to any attraction even tangentially related to the monarchy. I’d like to see some surveys carried out as to the actual reasons people choose to visit these attractions, because I don’t believe that the continued existence of the monarchy plays that significant a role. The interest in our historical attractions is, after all, historical. And I would wager that the… Read more »

To confirm your view – take France, no monarchy for over 200 years but millions still visit Versailles and other ex-royal castles and palaces.

I’ve heard that the Place de la Concorde is pretty popular with the tourists too.

You only have to look at Visit Britain’s regular research into popular visitor attractions, royal residencies are pretty low on the list.

Only a quarter? How thoroughly disappointing that so many of The People are happy to kneel to the German Queen of the English.
Serf mentality is what holds us all back.
EDIT: Oh wait! The polling org are called British Future and no reference is made to the size and constitution of the sample group.
That which is asserted without verifiable evidence can be dismissed without evidence

You cannot claim to live in a democracy where there’s a Monarchy ruling over you. Both are incomparable with one another. And once the Queen passes the archaic system of Monarchy should end with her and Wales should become a republic ruled by the people for the people

The big question is why does 75% want to keep them? What exactly have they done for us, particulary in Cymru? Apart from being good reporting material, people love the megan v kate stuff, they own vast tracts of land, live in a world competely separate from ordinary people, pay little tax and are a waste of public money.

The title is King or Queen of England, Wales was taken over, that is my point. Also as far as I know the Queen was born and brought up in England, but my main point is the title not where someone’s ancestors came from a few hundred years ago

The question was “are you interested in the Queens Jubilee” if you answer yes then you support the Monarchy. That is a bit of a jump for me.

Yes, exactly. I did wonder how this question had been phrased. It’s a massive manipulation of the data to extrapolate support for the monarchy from those results!

And as someone else has pointed out, support for the current monarch may not necessarily translate into support for the institution as a whole.

Yes it seems like a very leading question and checking out the website of the completely unbiased “British Future” polling org, apart from using a very small dataset, they seem obsessed with the monarchy and the union. A less charitable person than myself might conclude that opinions are collected that confirm their pre-held biases

If the truth is known the majority was simply not interested in fate of the UK monarchy.
…As long as they get paid days off work.

Just get on with Independence and building a new Welsh nation with a written constitution.

Australia and New Zealand recognises the UK monarch as long as it does not interfere with their parliament and their independent sovereign policy & decision making.
