Anti-Australian trade deal ad campaign to target Welsh Secretary and six other Tory MPs in Wales

Campaigners who oppose the Australian trade deal have said that they will pour cash into ads targeting Welsh Secretary Simon Hart.

The European Movement say that they are targeting 44 MPs who backed the UK-Australia trade deal which they say will lower animal welfare and food standards.

The campaign will also target former Welsh Secretaries Alun Cairns and David Jones, as well as Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones, Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams, Clwyd South MP Simon Baynes and Vale of Clwyd MP James Davies.

Simon Hart’s Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire and James Davies’ Vale of Clwyd are two of ten seats that will be targetted more than the others, campaigners said.

The money will fund a string of “aggressive campaign ads” in their constituencies which will focus on animal welfare, environment and food standards, like chlorinated chicken.

One ad will feature a picture of a frightened lamb and read: “‘Skinning lambs alive is cruel and shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the UK market. Tell your Tory MP [name here] to fight for animal welfare standards.”

The movement is chaired by Labour peer Lord Adonis, who said that the Australian trade agreement was a “bad deal that critically undermines traditional British values”.

“The British public is clear: Back British farmers, keep chlorine out of our food and stop slashing standards,” he said.

Simon Hart welcomed the Australian trade deal when it was announced, saying it had been “struck over a plate of Welsh lamb”.

“More than 450 Welsh businesses exported to Australia last year and this deal opens up the opportunity for many more to join them,” he said.

“bad deal that critically undermines traditional British values”. What does that mean when British values means imperialism, war mongering, institutionalised racism, covering for child molesters and pushing non democracy while sucking up to an unelected head of state hoping for a peerage?

British values is just a buzz phrase which means absolutely nothing and used by BS merchants and the over privileged.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, among other prominent ERG Tory Brexiteers, assured us that a vote to leave the EU would allow food prices to be cut. Still waiting on that because they seem to be going in the other direction. In any event, prices are related to costs and costs are related to standards. Wales voted to leave the EU and knew what they were voting for. To vote to leave and then to complain about the known consequences is ridiculous. If you wish to protect your farmers then the only route is to push for independence and to re-join the EU.… Read more »

These treacherous Tory MPs are actively destroying Welsh farming, its rural communities and the wider Welsh economy with this desperate one-sided Australian & New Zealand trade deals.

And not only should they be revealed by this campaign for what they really are., should also be removed as MPs come the next General Election hook or by crook. And if this means tactical voting. So be it!
