An anti-BBC campaign group has complained about a news report that linked supply chain issues to Brexit.

Defund The BBC took exception to Welsh broadcaster Huw Edwards saying on the News at Ten that experts have said that the “effects of Brexit” are “partly to blame” for shortages.

The Wetherspoons pub chain has said some of its pubs have run out of some beer, with Heineken, Carling and Coors among the brands affected.

Heineken and brewer Molson Coors said that like many in the industry, they had been hit by a shortage of HGV drivers.

Coca-Cola has said Diet Coke was unavailable in some supermarkets owing to the driver shortage.

Hauliers have blamed on Covid and Brexit for the UK facing a shortage of lorry drivers and have called for immigration rules to be changed to allow EU drivers to return.

But the UK Government has consistently dismissed the call, saying that the haulage industry and retailers need to be training new UK drivers.

‘Problems’

When introducing a piece on the recent supply chain issues, Huw Edwards said: “The Wetherspoons chain said a number of its pubs have run out of some brands of beer because of problems with supplies.

“A shortage of lorry drivers is said to be an important factor in recent problems with logistics across the food and drink industry.

“Experts say the pandemic is partly to blame, as are the effects of Brexit.”

In response Defund The BBC said: “The whole world is grappling with supply chain issues and yet the anti-British Broadcasting Corporation are desperately trying to pin it on Brexit. Your campaigning failed, get over it!”

Can assure readers that Europe is not “grappling with supply chain issues”.
But the “whole world” is grappling and holdings its sides laughing at Brexiteers.

All that the BBC has done is reported what is being said from a wide variety of sources.

So why did the government not suggest training more HGV driving examiners when it did it’s due diligence on Brexit?

It didn’t foresee the problem and certainly didn’t want to foresee any problems? Just “get Brexit done”

Part of the big fib ( or blissful ignorance) surrounding the Tory case for Brexit was that we would somehow continue to tap the rest of Europe and the world for cheap labour despite new rules to constrain immigration being one of their biggest implied “benefits” of Brexit !. Confused thinking, or downright lying ? That’s what you get when any major movement is led by a mixed bunch of lying schemers and thickos. I was pro-Brexit as I objected to the “big state” ambitions of Brussels cliques and that remains the case. However I expected politicians, civil servants business… Read more »

I’d have said lying thickos and schemers but much the same. My theory is that they didn’t expect to win so didn’t need to have plans for a post Brexit country. The same as the protocols for dealing with the long expected pandemic. Don’t worry it probably won’t happen. They could have just watched Hannah Fry’s documentary Contagion 2018. I watched it again in 2020 and it was spot on. Douglas Adams in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy had a bunch of useless humanoids from the planet Golgafrincham. They spent their time preening and doing their hair and other… Read more »

The BBC has reported the facts and expert opinion in this case. The Brex**itters are just losing their minds because the reality is now becoming clear to the ignorant and the arrogant. It’s Brex**it because it causes sh*t.

I agree. There may be a case for reappraising the level of funding and how BBC spends that funding, but Defund the Beeb is a totally negative extremist hate group full of people purporting to be pro- free market, but only a market that suits their peculiar predisposition.

Who said it was entirely down to Brexit? Your rush to denial confirms it more than any claim by the BBC.
