Becoming a Republic offers Barbados a ‘new beginning’ says Prince of Wales
The Prince of Wales has said that becoming a republic offers Barbados the chance of a “new beginning”.
Prince Charles was speaking as the Royal Standard was lowered in Barbados for the final time last night, as the Queen was replaced as head of state by the new President Dame Sandra Mason.
The moment, watched by cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers and singer Rihanna, marked exactly 55 years since Barbados gained its independence from Britain.
“The creation of this republic offers a new beginning, but it also marks a point on a continuum, a milestone on the long road you have not only travelled, but which you have built,” Prince Charles said.
“From the darkest days of our past, and the appalling atrocity of slavery, which forever stains our history, the people of this island forged their path with extraordinary fortitude.”
After 396 years of control by Britain, he added that: “Emancipation, self-government and Independence were your way-points. Freedom, justice and self-determination have been your guides.”
“Your long journey has brought you to this moment, not as your destination, but as a vantage point from which to survey a new horizon.”
The Queen had earlier sent her congratulations to the new president who was the island’s former Governor General.
“Republic Barbados has set sail on her maiden voyage,” President Sandra Mason said in her inauguration speech. “Our country must dream big dreams and fight to realise them.”

“After 396 years of control by Britain …” – this is incorrect. Britain has had no control over Barbados since independence in 1966, even though we shared a monarch. So it was 341 years control by Britain, 55 years as an independent monarchy.
Come on Charles do the same for Wales helping to get independence for Wales you would go down in History

He’s a cariad, isn’t he? Who wrote that for him? He evidently didn’t write it himself as I’m sure he doesn’t believe a word of it. Love the way the Brit media are trying to make out that Barbados’ Republicanism will be bad for the island’s tourism recovery post-Covid. They’ll inevitably use this argument against all of us ‘rebellious Celts’ – Scotland first, then us, then Cornwall. There’ll be jolly times ahead under the aegis of the visionary, humanitarian King Carlo.
