Boris Johnson has wished England and Scotland luck at Euro 2020 – but he failed to mention Wales.

The international football tournament was brought up at a session of Prime Minister’s Questions by the leader of the SNP in the House of Commons, Ian Blackford.

Blackford wished “all the best” Scotland, which to prompted Boris Johnson to do so too, as well as to England, and “all the home nations who may be playing”.

The Welsh national team is currently in their training camp in Baku in Azerbaijan, preparing for the competition, which is due to kick off on June 11.

Ian Blackford said: “I’m sure we’re all looking forward to the European Championships kicking off later this week.

“Can I take the opportunity to wish all the best to our country, Scotland, Steve Clarke and the team, and to remind the team it is time for heroes?”

Boris Johnson replied: “Can I by the way Mr Speaker wish all the very best to Scotland, and England, and all the home nations who may be playing in this…”

Pointing at Ian Blackford he added: I don’t know whether he is going to reciprocate Mr Speaker. but you never know. It’s worth a shot I thought. Oh, he did. There you go. That’s nice of him.”

‘Slightly odd’

Following an exchange between the two ITV’s Political Editor Robert Peston remarked: “Slightly odd that @BorisJohnson does not appear to know that Wales is in the Euro finals #PMQs”.

Drew Evans replied: “Really not surprised at this”.

Morgan Haigh said: “This isn’t odd at all. The man can’t convince of anything outside the borders of England!”

Former Welsh Government minister Alun Davies said: “It’s because he doesn’t give a damn!”

Pete Davies said: “It’s the least surprising thing I’ve ever heard.”

Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville-Roberts described it as the latest in a series of “own goals” for the PM.

“Embrace capitalism”? Welsh Labour actively does this already, as do all Governments – be they Local or Central at present within the UK. And no, they aren’t seeking to abandon it either.

With apologies to Oscar Wilde… The only thing worse than not being talked about by Boris Johnson is being talked about by Boris Johnson

I am not surprised, to people like Boris Cymru/Wales does not exist. The sooner we have independence the better.

We’ve been a colony of England for so long it’s hardly surprising. He doesn’t think of Cymru as a nation – just a possession.
