‘Cachu mawr!’: New Facebook Portal ad features potty mouthed use of the Welsh language

22 Nov 2021 2 minute read

A new advert for Facebook Portal features some rather potty-mouthed use of the Welsh language.

The advert includes two girls asking Portal ‘How do you say poo in Welsh?’ Portal responds ‘Cachu mawr!’ and they both repeat the word and laugh.

The ad comes as Facebook rolls out a new version of Portal+ in order to compete with Amazon’s Alexa in the Christmas market for those Black Friday pounds.

The ad is one of four released over the past few days that features a range of children using the device to interact with their grandparents.

The appearance of ‘Cachu mawr’ in an advert however drew bemused responses by some on social media, who thought it was a bit ruder than the advert makers realised.

Has anyone seen the new Facebook Portal advert?” asked Matthew Woolfall Jones. “I love that you see the Welsh language on stuff now, but… ‘Can you say poo in Welsh?’ ‘Cachu Mawr

“To non-Welsh speakers, yes it does kinda mean that, but literally it’s: ‘Big Shit’.”

Elen Jones responded: “Not sure why the portal advert feels the need to say ‘cachu mawr,’ I’m sure they could’ve chosen a better Welsh word.”

Catrin Newman added in Welsh that the Facebook advert was “completely bonkers”.

The English are doing it again it’s no wonder that they are the most hated people in the world the Welsh language is the OLDEST LIVING LANGUAGE IN THE WHOLE OFF EUROPE what a way to treat that language and culture and I’m not a Welsh speaker but i think it’s a disgrace if they did that to any other countries language there would be uproar

This is a storm in a tea cup. c***u mawr can mean a number of things in Cymraeg. And yes, it refers to the obvious, but this advert were an innocent interaction between a grandfather & grandchildren. It’s the minds of the ones who were offended that’s dirty not the advert itself..
