A cafe and bakery in Cardigan has said that the reaction to a Black Lives Matter poster put up in their window has been “embarrassing” for the town.

The owners of Crwst said that the poster would remain in the window as they were proud supporters of the movement and that “the sooner people educate themselves, the better”.

They also posted a sample of the reactions the poster had received, including threats to boycott the cafe.

“I find it offensive, they should have put up ‘All lives matter!'” one said.

“Totally agree. All lives matter. Today it’s even in Welsh!” another said.

The latest post however also received warm congratulations. “As a part of Cardigans small BAME community I greatly appreciate your stance on this matter!” one said. “Keep doing what you’re doing guys.”

Ceredigion Senedd Member Elin Jones was among those backing Crwst. “All power to you. Keep supporting Black Lives Matter,” she said.

‘History’

In a message on their Facebook group, Crwst said they would not be taking the poster down and that the sooner people educated themselves as to the movement, the better.

“Aberteifi – When there has been a crisis, we are known to pull together as a community and rally around that particular group,” the owners said.

“Look at the money we have raised for the NHS during lockdown. Look at the support local and vulnerable people received during lockdown. Who remembers when we painted the town pink for Cardigan Cancer Care? Where were the people against this? Where were the people saying ‘what about other illnesses?’ Where were the people boycotting local shops who had a pink display in the window?

“What an embarrassing night for Cardigan. Black Lives Matter doesn’t discredit any other group, it brings awareness to the group that needs the attention NOW. It’s not ‘All Lives Matter’ until black lives matter too. Be on the right side of history!”
