There are concerns for 60 jobs in Ceredigion after Cambrian Printers announced plans to move.

Owners Pensord Press have told its workforce at the Cambrian Printers in Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth, that they will move production to Blackwood.

Ceredigion Senedd Member Elin Jones said that the news was “extremely disappointing”.

“There are currently roughly 60 staff based in Aberystwyth, and although I understand that workers may be transferred to Blackwood, this will not be possible for most,” she said.  “For many, their families and homes are here.

“The printing and publishing sector is central to the Ceredigion economy and Cambrian Printers is a long-established leader in the printing sector in Wales. The skills of this workforce are very valuable here.

“I have raised this issue as a matter of urgency with the Welsh Government’s Economy Minister, and have asked him to work with the County Council to try and retain these valuable jobs in Ceredigion.”

‘Continuity’

The family-owned company that has been printing for 160 years was bought by Pensord printers, based in Blackwood, near Caerphilly, in 2017.

A Spokeswoman for Cambrian Printers and Pensord told the Golwg360 website: “The Cambrian Printers name has been a cornerstone of the Aberystwyth community for many years.

“We bought the company just over three years ago to continue that tradition well into the future.

“Despite Brexit and difficult trading conditions over that period, we have been able to make progress, and have made the company profitable again in 2018 and 2019.

“We are certainly not alone when we say that the crisis we are facing now, due to the coronavirus, is a mountain to climb.

“We are therefore considering what changes we need to make to ensure business continuity.

“The process of communicating with employees is at an early stage, and as we have not yet begun the formal employee consultation process, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”
