A “controversial” conference will debate the future of Christianity in Wales in Aberystwyth this coming Saturday.

The Welsh-language conference held at the Merched y Wawr Centre, Vulcan St between 9.30am and 4pm on March 30 will consider whether Christianity should be considered as a myth rather than a historical record.

Scientist Gareth Wyn Jones will compare the Christian vision with the scientific evidence while faithful chapel-goer and deacon Arwel (‘Rocet’) Jones will describe how he has had to redefine his position over recent years.

Academic Catrin Williams will consider aspects of ‘faith’ and ‘belief’ while humanist Huw Williams will ask whether ‘returning to religion’ is the way ahead for him.

Former Ceredigion MP Cynog Dafis, one of the conference organisers, said that he wanted to explore whether Christianity was a myth and, if so, what contribution can the myth make to society.

“The number intending to attend is increasing and I look forward to a lively and open debate,” he said.

Anyone wanting to attend the conference can contact Cynog Dafis on [email protected] or 07977 093110 (text or phone), but can also turn up on the day.

An associated dramatic presentation will take place at Seion vestry, Baker Street on Friday at 7pm. Admission will be free.
