A date has been set for YesCymru’s Extraordinary General Meeting where members will get the chance to vote on a new constitution.

The vote will take place between December 10 and 11 to decide whether to accept the proposals of the Gweithgor, a working group that has been tasked with putting together a “robust legal framework”.

Once the proposals have been voted on the group will be able to elect a new governing body to lead it.

The grassroots pro-independence has been through a period of turmoil amid bitter infighting, which led to the resignation of its Central Committee, including that of its chair, Sion Jobbins.

The ‘Gweithgor’ was set up in August following concerns that YesCymru’s constitution and electoral processes needed to be updated for a movement with a membership of almost 20,000.

There was a vote of no confidence in the Central Committee from regional groups of the National Committee. All members of the Central Committee collectively resigned from their posts shortly thereafter.

A working group was then set up that also formed sub-committees to look at the structure, finance, governance, procedures, groups and some wider policies such as social media.

‘Opportunity to decide’

A statement from YesCymru said: “This day we will have the opportunity to decide on the future of Wales’ largest political movement.

“Because of the significant growth of YesCymru, structures and legal frameworks are now needed to replace the current ones, which are more suited to a small community organisation.

“The Gweithgor (The working group tasked with drafting a new constitution) has been working hard with lawyers to draft their proposals into a robust legal framework which is now ready to be put before the members at the EGM.

“We’ll have a chance to vote on these changes on December 10th and 11th, by registering for the EGM at the link below.”

The statement continued: “Once we’ve voted on these proposals we can elect a new governing body and return to campaigning for an independent Wales.”

Good. I hope the proposed amendments will be published to the members in advance so that we know what we are voting upon. I note there is a limit on the number of attendees. I hope that should this number be reached that additional capacity can be found. Furthermore I hope that efforts are made to include those with no digital access in the voting process. Lastly I hope that the organisation moves onwards as it became an active distraction from the independence cause in the manner in which the disagreements earlier this year were conducted. We cannot afford for… Read more »

There aren’t any ‘amendments’ – there is a complete new structure which people either accept or reject, with some fall-back options if they reject it, which they may well want to. I believe that it has been proposed that amendments will not be accepted.

Fair comment. I’d like to see the proposals in advance regardless.

Excellent news 👏 Let’s get the new constitution sorted and get a new team of officers in place so that yes cymru can get back to doing what it did so well before its recent troubles – building popular support for welsh indy!

We who care about Wales & Welsh democracy all need to pull in the same direction. Don’t fall into the Unionist trap of divide and rule.

There are so many hostile forces wanting to destroy Wales, who will sell their soul and our country out in the process to gain favour.

Perhaps it needs a constitution but it should be kept simple and retain the focus on the ONE prime overarching objective. Anything other than that will serve only to distract and divert. Or maybe that remains the objective of some of those involved ?
