Captain Beany and First Minister Mark Drakeford share a moment at the Cardiff West count

Mark Drakeford has been congratulated on his election victory by ‘superhero’ candidate Captain Beany.

The First Minister was approached by the orange-garbed crusader who stood as an independent, after he rocketed to 17,665 votes and increased Labour’s majority in Cardiff West by 12.8%.

The dynamic duo bumped elbows on what was a successful election day for Welsh Labour, where it withstood challenges in key battlegrounds from Plaid Cymru and the Conservatives, and increased its share of the vote across Wales.

The election was slightly less successful for the magnificently caped Captain Beany for whom 95 ballots were cast, and got a 0.3% share of the vote.

Drakeford comfortably fended off Rhys ab Owen of Plaid Cymru, who got 5,897 votes, Sean Driscoll of the Conservatives who received 6,454, and Neil McEvoy, who won 3,473.
