For Wales, see England – or so say Netflix
Wales is in England, according to the streaming service Netflix.
The summary page for the film Pride, which is set in a small mining village named Onllwyn in Wales, describes the country as being in England.
“During the 1984 Welsh mineworkers strike in England, gay and lesbian activists forge an unlikely alliance with the striking miners’ families,” it says.
Based on a true story, the film depicts a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the strike.
But Netflix’s mistake did not impress some viewers.
“Sorry Netflix, the Welsh miners’ strike WHERE?!” Katherine Moore asked.
“If they don’t know now, they’ll certainly be made aware in November,” said Dafydd Timothy, referring to the Wales game against England in the World Cup, where they share a group with the USA.
It was pointed out by another that Netflix made the same mistake when they first streamed the film in 2018.

They should remove the ‘Br*tish’ genre from netflix. Promoting propaganda and poison.
That’ll be the film Pride in which a supposedly local Welsh character launches into the final rousing song in highly ornamented, wholly and distinctively Irish traditional style and everyone joins in.
(the performer is a very distinguished and accomplished Irish folk musician. Presumably Wales has no singers. “What do you mean there’s different sorts of Celtic?”. Ruined the film at the last gasp for me.)

Having Netflix myself checked the film synopsis and noticed they’ve changed the wording. The irony.
And it’s still wrong. It was not the 1984 Welsh Miners’ Strike. It was the UK miners’ strike. Otherwise how did all those Nottinghamshire miners cave in and betray all the other mining communities? The hated Lord Haw Haw Silver Birch was not a Cymro!
And Netflix wonders why its viewership is haemorrhaging. Ignorance is bliss and Netflix is blissfully ignorant.
Typical ignorance. However, while we remain part of the UK we will always be referred to as ‘England’ by other nations.
I remember a time when many people, erroneously, refered to the countries of the USSR collectively as ‘Russia’. Now, nobody refers to Estonia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan etc. as ‘Russia’.
Only independence will bring about recognition of our nation and nationality. We can complain all we like but only we can cure this ultimately.
I have just watched a very good documentary film on Netflix though, called ‘The Spider’s Web’ which highlights the corruption of the London financial system. Highly recommend.
Funnily enough I heard recently that it IS Holland not The Netherlands (or Nederlands).

So I verified. You are correct. The recent information I heard was incorrect. It is indeed Nederland or Nederlands. The two provinces Nord and Zuit Holland make up “Holland”.
So calling Nederland Holland is akin to calling the United Kingdom “Britain” or “England”.
Yes. It’s like calling England ‘The home counties’ and ignoring the rest of it so Netherlands is right.
Only independence will eradicate this ignorance.
To avoid further misunderstanding, maybe it’s time to ditch the word Wales in favour of Cymru, following the lead of the football team. It happened with Ayers Rock/Uluru and Turkey/Türkiye, for example.
