Former Labour candidate calls on Aberconwy voters to vote for Plaid Cymru

A former Labour candidate for Aberconwy has called on people in the constituency to vote for Plaid Cymru’s Aaron Wynne to “get rid of the Tories”.

Eifion Williams was Labour’s candidate in 2011 for the marginal seat, that is a hotly contested between Plaid Cymru and the Conservative Party at the Senedd election.

In 2016 the incumbent Janet Finch-Saunders came within 754 votes of losing the constituency.

Environmentalist and long time Labour activist, Eifion Williams, who lives in Bwlchgwyn near Wrexham, has joined Plaid Cymru, and has said Labour voters should back the pro-independence party.

He has hit out at Westminster “cronyism” and has argued that devolution “simply won’t take the strain” of Conservative governments “attacking our health service in Wales”.

He said: “I would call on all Labour supporters in Aberconwy to lend their vote to Plaid Cymru this time. People in the constituency have been let down for the last ten years by their Tory MS.

“And by the Tory-run council. I’m really looking forward to joining Aaron on the campaign trail in Aberconwy. The only way to get rid of the Tories in Aberconwy is to vote for Aaron Wynne on Thursday. If you vote for Aaron the only thing you have to lose is a bad Tory MS.”

Aaron Wynne Plaid Cymru Senedd candidate for Aberconwy, said: “This is an incredibly tight race. And we really need something to change in Aberconwy. We need a representative who understands what people struggle with everyday.

“We need a proper and fair housing system that works for the people and not the landlords, we need fair wages for the people who keep our economy and vital services going and we need a strong voice who will stand up to the establishment. That’s why I’m grateful for Eifion’s support and the support of so many Labour voters across Aberconwy.”

‘Labour Party’

Eifion Williams told WrecsamPlaid: “I was a member of the Labour Party since 1989 after seeing my father in pain every night waiting for a heart operation.

!The cross-party consensus in the UK, to respect the health service, has been scrapped for good. Devolution as it currently stands simply won’t take the strain of Tory governments in Westminster attacking our health service in Wales.

“I don’t want to have to fight Westminster every 20 years to wrestle our health service back; I want something more stable when our lives are at stake.

“Wales wants to be a team player, on its own terms, by having an independence referendum, that’s all.

“We need to admit where real division is coming from rather than to point the finger at Wales for wanting a full democracy. It’s the current UK – a UK of cronyism, of being isolated in the world, of spending billions on weapons, of now pushing a one-size-fits-all culture that dismisses all else with distain – that fills me with fear.

“With 54% of Labour supporters in Wales now supporting independence, they’re seeing the distinction. If we’re to stop Wales from getting bullied in Boris’s Brexit Britain over the next five years, the political landscape has to change on Thursday, that’s why Wales now needs to vote Plaid on Thursday.”
