Former rugby referee Nigel Owens has donated one of his match-worn shirts to “ensure that nobody goes hungry.”

Owens, who recently retired after a 17-year career, has teamed up with Trussell Trust and Beyond The White Line (BTWL) in order to “fight to build a hunger free future”.

The TV personality, who currently holds the world record for the most test matches refereed, has given a signed European Professional Club Rugby jersey, which is up for grabs on Crowdfunder. To enter into the prize draw for a chance of winning the shirt costs £5, and over £1,300 has been raised by the Crowdfunder so far.

Trussell Trust supports a nationwide network of food banks which provides emergency food and support to people locked in poverty. It also campaigns for change to build a future where food banks are no longer needed.

Beyond The White Line (BTWL) is a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to affect change within the professional sports industry for athletes and stakeholders alike.

In a video message Nigel Owens said: “I’m delighted to get involved with Beyond The White Line and Crowdfunder for the fight against poverty and ensure that people don’t go hungry.

“So, I am donating this shirt, which will be signed of course. I’ll send the Tipp-Ex as well if you want to get the signed signature off.

“Hopefully this will help us feed the 14 million people who are in need of it, so get involved and get a chance to win this signed shirt.”

The Trussell Trust said: “Beyond The White Line is proud to bring together Nigel and other sporting icons to The Trussell Trust on Crowdfunder to help in the fight against poverty and ensure that nobody goes hungry. Every penny raised will go directly to supporting our cause.”
