Former Welsh Secretary suggests BBC ‘ignores’ England following football win
A former Welsh Secretary has suggested that the BBC ignores England, following the country’s win against Denmark in the semi-final of Euro 2020.
John Redwood, the Tory MP for Wokingham in Berkshire, claimed England was the most “ignored and understated” country in the union, after Gareth Southgate’s men booked their place in the final against Italy with a 2-1 win over the Danes.
He also claimed the football success was “great for the UK”, despite Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each having their own international football teams.
England came back from being a goal down to beat Denmark after extra time after Mikkel Damsgaard put the Danes ahead with a free kick.
They equalised when Simon Kjaer put past his own keeper trying to stop Raheem Sterling from connecting with Bukayo Saka’s low cross.
Harry Kane scored the winner from a rebound after Kasper Schmeichel had saved his penalty.
In response to the win, Redwood said: “Brilliant England win. Great for the UK. Great for the most ignored and understated country in our Union. Even the BBC has to mention England today.”
‘Nonsense’
Daily Mirror associate editor replied: “What’s most disturbing is the former Secretary of State for Wales believes this nonsense #daftlad”.
The Conservative politician has previously lashed out at devolution, claiming it is “unfair on England”.
He was responding to a suggestion by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown that the UK is at risk of becoming a “failed state” and that it needs “fundamental reform”.
This was after Brown was tasked by Labour’s Westminster leader Keir Starmer with looking at how more power could be devolved to the nations and regions of the UK.
But according to Redwood, devolution was “lop-sided” and his “latest suggestions would make things worse.”

One has to question John Major’s values, judgment and regard for Wales and the Welsh in appointing a rabid English nationalist as Secretary of State for Wales. Redwood, who famously never slept a night in Wales while holding the office of SoS. And refused to sign any document in Welsh.

Either he is in a parallel universe or he knows what he is doing and causing trouble by whipping up English nationalism, playing with fire and very dangerous. Just look what happened to the former Yugoslavia.
