God Save the Queen to be played for two royal arrivals at Senedd official opening
God Save the Queen will be played for two royal arrivals at the Senedd for the parliament’s official opening.
When the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall arrive for the ceremony on October 14, Hen Wlad fy Nhadau and God Save the Queen will be played for the couple, and a Royal Salute will be given as their car passes and draws to a halt at the front of the building.
As they arrive for the official opening of the Sixth Senedd, Prince Charles and Camila will be met by Sir Brooke Boothby, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of South Glamorgan.
He will present Mark Drakeford the First Minister, Elin Jones the Llywydd, and Manon Antoniazzi, the Chief Executive and Clerk of the Senedd.
There will also be an opportunity to meet pupils from Mount Stuart Primary before entering the building.
A few minutes later, the Queen will arrive at the Senedd, and when she does so six bars of God Save the Queen will be played, and Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau will be played in full. A Royal Salute is given as her car draws to a halt.
The monarch will also ben met by Sir Brooke Boothby, who will escort her to the entrance of the Senedd building and present the First Minister, the Llywydd. She will also have the opportunity to meet pupils of Mount Stuart Primary before entering the building.
‘Trumpeters’
The monarch will enter to fanfare, sounded by trumpeters. The Llywydd will then present Adam Price, Leader of Plaid Cymru, as well as a representative from Welsh Conservative Senedd Group. Jane Dodds, a Liberal Democrats Senedd Member, will also be presented, as well as Manon Antoniazzi, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Senedd.
The First Minister will presented them to The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.
Following that there will be a performance by the WNO Youth Opera. The Mace-bearer will lead the Royal Party to the Siambr. Once in the Siambr, the Mace-bearer places the mace in sconce, bows and leaves. The Royal Harpist will be performing in the Siambr during this period.
The ceremony for the opening of the Sixth Senedd will then begin.
During the official opening of the Senedd, the Queen will make a speech in the Senedd’s chamber, as will the Llywydd, Elin Jones , and First Minister, Mark Drakeford

I don’t object in principle to having a head of state chosen by lottery. But the lottery that we operate in the UK — the lottery of birth — seems to generate some truly wacky side-effects. If the head of state of the US visited the senedd we’d play the star spangled banner, if the head of state of france visited the senedd we’d play La Marseillaise….it’s customary to play the national anthem of a foreign country when our parliament is visited by its head of state…😉
