Iechyd da! Ryan Reynolds sends cases of gin to Welsh language community pub in Wrexham

Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds has sent cases of gin and a personal message to a Welsh language community pub in Wrexham.

The Deadpool actor, who has recently been given the green light to take over Wrexham AFC along with fellow actor Rob McElhenney, sent the Saith Seren on Chester Street three cases of the premium Aviation Gin in which he has a business interest.

The gin has gone down well with the community pub that is also a hub for Welsh language activities in the town.

The cases came with the message: “To the folks at Saith Seren: Some for you and some for me. Hopefully see you soon – Ryan Reynolds”

Wrexham local Carrie Harper, and Plaid Cymru candidate for the list seat of North Wales in May’s Senedd election was delighted by what greeted her when she popped down to the Saith Seren to watch Wales play Finland in the footy.

In an online video message, she said: “So I’ve popped down to the Saith Seren to watch the football, and lo and behold, look what’s turned up, 18 bottles of Aviation Gin from the one and only Ryan Reynolds.

“I know that the Saith Seren are going to be auctioning off at least one of these bottles to raise money for local charity.

“This has been just an absolutely amazing week for the club, but it’s been amazing for the town as well, and it’s just fantastic to see Wrexham on the up. So iechyd da!”

She also added: “So @SaithSeren has had an ‪@AviationGin delivery from ‪@VancityReynolds! Can’t wait to welcome you and @RMcElhenney to ‪@wrexham soon, your table is reserved, can’t promise there’ll be much Gin left though.”

Reynolds responded with: “Save one for me and see ya soon.”

 

‘Thrilling’

Marc Jones, who helps run the Saith Seren, said: “So ‪@VancityReynolds is following ‪@SaithSeren. How’s your day going?”

Jones, who is a Wrexham County Borough Councillor, and a Wrexham Supporters’ Trust member, had set out his reasons for accepting the bid for the club in an emotional Facebook message before the news broke that it had been given the green light.

He said: “Every Wrexham fan will understand the Racecourse rollercoaster of emotions.

“I’ve been on it since seeing Wrexham beat Brentford in 1969-70. A dire game enlivened by a late Arfon Griffiths penalty at the Tech End. We were in the Kop and it took a second for the noise to carry. Hooked.

“So I listened closely to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny as they bid to become our new owners. We’ve had some poor ones – people who saw pound signs not passion, a quick buck not community. These two are different.

“But let’s never forget – Fan ownership saved our club. The WST (Wrexham Supporters’ Trust) – made up of thousands of volunteers – deserve our thanks for that.

“Despite being a passionate advocate of fan ownership, the new buyers offer a new and potentially thrilling turn on the rollercoaster.

“I’ve voted yes to the buyout but will keep paying my WST membership – knowing that when their time is up we, the fans, will need to step up again. Because owners come and go, managers come and go, players come and go. Only the fans remain – the one constant in our 156-year history.

“So strap yourselves in for the next turn on the Racecourse rollercoaster.”
