Labour accused of economic mismanagement as Senedd race reaches the final straight

The Welsh Conservatives claim another five years of a Labour controlled Welsh Government will “hold back” Wales’ economic recovery” and accuse Labour of mismanaging the country for more than two decades.

Launching a new advertising campaign as the Senedd election campaign enters the final stretch, the Tories say 22 years under a Labour government has resulted in workers taking home £2,500 a year less than those in other UK nations, whilst one in five people now languish on an NHS waiting list.

The new ad-van campaign also points out the Welsh schools’ system has been ranked the worst in the UK five times in a row and complains that key infrastructure commitments such as the M4 relief road have been scrapped, despite Labour spending £157 million on the project.

“Wales’ simply can’t afford another five years of Labour in Cardiff Bay”, Andrew RT Davies, leader of the Conservative group in the Senedd said.

‘Crumbling’

“Our infrastructure is crumbling, we have the weakest economy and the lowest paid workers in Britain – yet Labour’s priority is more powers, taxes and fighting the UK Government at every turn.

“It’s an agenda that will let down Welsh families, workers and businesses and will only hold back Wales’ economic recovery.

“The choice at next week’s election is clear. Five more years of the same with a Labour Party allowed the economic problems in Wales to mount up for over 20 years and now have no plans to fix things.

“Or change with the Welsh Conservatives, who have a clear plan to create jobs and deliver a long-term economic recovery for families, workers and businesses across Wales.”

The most recent poll for next week’s Senedd election has confirmed a healthy Labour lead over the Conservatives.

The Savanta ComRes poll, published on Thursday, had Labour on 36% of the vote to the Conservative’s 27% in the constituencies, and 31% to 21% on the list.

A recent YouGov poll showed Labour on 35% to the Conservative’s 24% in the constituencies and suggested Labour would ensure close to a majority of seats next Thursday, with 26 to the Conservatives’ 15.
