Labour choose candidate for Ynys Môn key three-way marginal

The Labour party have selected their candidate in an attempt to retain the Ynys Môn seat after MP Albert Owen decided to step down.

Mary Roberts said that she had been born and raised on the Anglesey and said that she had “the passion, experience and campaigning skills” to represent the island.

“I’m delighted to have been chosen as the next Labour candidate for Ynys Môn and look forward to working together to retain the seat for Labour, and continue Albert Owen’s valuable work for the island,” Mary Roberts said.

The constituency is a three way marginal, with Labour, Plaid Cymru and the Conservative Party vying for the seat over the last decades.

Plaid Cymru have selected the former journalist Aled ap Dafydd to challenge for the seat.

In the 2017 General Election, Labour came first with 15,643 votes, the Conservatives third with 10,384 and Plaid Cymru third on 10,237.

However, recent opinion polling has projected that Plaid Cymru would take the seat in a General Election. They already retain the seat at the Welsh Assembly.

There was an all women’s shortlist in Ynys Môn, as the Labour party have a policy of all women shortlists in seats with retiring MPs until there is gender parity in the Parliamentary Labour party.

Anglesey elected the first female MP in Wales, Megan Lloyd-George, in 1929.

All parties and previous candidates supported a new, much larger nuclear power station, Wylfa Newydd. That’s on the way out. Time and focus on sustainable new development has been lost. The Welsh Government consulted on who which communities were willing to take the nuclear waste; none volunteered. So will the new candidates likewise declare allegiance to nuclear power and volunteer to house the waste on Anglesey for tens of thousands of years.. Or will they say – without solution for the nuclear waste, there must be no nuclear new-build. Also that Wales must plan to store the Wylfa-A magnox-nuclear waste… Read more »

AMLWCH REGENERATION ?
Over a prolonged period, Amlwch has become seriously economically depressed.
It seems the Parties have been neglectful ?
Will the candidates attend hustings there to set out their vision for the regeneration of the Town ?
