Labour MP Chris Bryant ‘hates idea that all MPs have their snouts in the trough’

Welsh Labour MP Chris Bryant has said that he hates the idea that all MPs “have their snouts in the trough.”

The chair of the House of Commons standards committee, who represents the Rhondda constituency, made the comments amid allegations of sleaze engulfing the Westminster Parliament.

This follows the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson trying to overturn the standards committee to protect Tory colleague Owen Paterson who was found to have lobbied on behalf of a firm paying him a substantial amount of money.

Paterson, a former cabinet minister, had been suspended from the Commons for 30 days over the lobbying allegations, which led to Johnson trying to rip up the entire system to save him.

This prompted a fierce backlash, which led to Johnson ditching the plan. Paterson then resigned as an MP.

The standards committee is considering whether to limit second jobs for MPs in its report later this month, Bryant has confirmed. This could include a ban on second jobs that involve lobbying.

‘On the take’

Bryant told the Financial Times: “I hate the idea that people are getting the impression that all MPs are on the take or have their snouts in the trough.

“It was really irresponsible of the government to do what it did last week; there are a lot of Tory MPs who are in despair.”

He added: “Every MP who is here entered politics to change the world for the better. That doesn’t make them saints… but the public rightly takes an interest in MPs abusing privileged positions for financial interests.”

Look up Leanne Wood’s declarations of financial interests too if you want to talk about people from the Rhondda who are landlords too.

You really should quote people accurately. Chris Bryant clearly did not use the words shown in your headline.

Said Chris Bryant MP, a man who once sold his London flats paid for by the public making £650,00 in the process, and then claimed £84,350 expenses to live elsewhere. Bryant also claimed over £92,000 in expenses over the five years leading up to the 2009. So his comments made regarding tarring all politicians with the same brush a little ironic seeing his record of wallowing like a political pig in the fiscal mud. The people of Rhondda must be stupid to vote for this Red Tory. A thing to note. He was once a Church of England priest .… Read more »

Classic example of zero self awareness. So detached from reality he will criticise Tories for the kind of rule bending that he has engaged in for years. That pit in London is now stinking so bad we need to get as far from it as possible.

Indeed. This is also a man who as a sitting MP thought it fine to pose in his underpants on a seedy gay website to make a political statement. And he has often stated how he fights for his constituents & Wales. But I beg to differ. Besides screwing the public purse with his vast expenses and rich lifestyle being a Red Tory , has also abstained on numerous Welsh devolution bills at Westminster that could have devolved policing & criminal justice systems to our Senedd. But he cynically attended and voted on a bill to devolve policing the the… Read more »

It’s useful to think about what an honest politician would do with a flat that [s]he bought on expenses.

Upon retiring or being voted out, our imaginary honest politician would be compelled by conscience to transfer the equity to his/her constituency. Ideally to a trust with four or five trustees, appointed from all locally active political parties. With the flat there and ready for their immediate use, the politician’s successors (of any party) would get off to a flying start with their parliamentary or seneddol duties.

Chris Bryant should be publically condemning ALL MP’S and MS’S of ALL political parties not just those on the opposite benches .All this information is available to the public. A bit of introspection wouldn’t go amiss!!!
