The Labour Party are looking for a new candidate in one of their key General Election target seats, Arfon, after the current candidate announced that she is standing down due to ill health.

In an announcement on Twitter, Mary Gwen Griffiths Clarke said: “I have decided to step down from politics on health grounds to focus on my legal career and campaigning for better access to justice and equality. I wish you all the best UK Labour.”

Plaid Cymru MP Hywel Williams won the seat in 2017 with a majority of only 92 votes. Arfon is number four of Labour’s list of target seats across the UK.

A spokesperson for Arfon Constituency Labour Party said they hope to launch their campaign on 12th November, a week from today (Tuesday).

“We wish Mary Gwen the best of luck as she takes steps to a legal career, and we would like to wish her better health for the future,” they told the Bangor Aye.

“Every Labour member is vital for Real Change in Britain and we look forward to taking our campaign to the streets this winter, showing the constituency how we will stand up for Arfon in a way no one has before.”

The Arfon seat includes Caernarfon as well as the University town of Bangor, ands surrounding rural villages.

Their references, in one of the heartlands of Welsh nationalism, to “UK Labour” and “Real change in Britiain”, speaks volumes about their incurably unionist mindset. They must never be allowed to do to the Bro Gymraeg what they have done to the Valleys.
