The layout of Lloyd George Avenue in Butetown could soon change with one lane turned into 106 new car parking spaces.

The main road runs from the city centre to Cardiff Bay, parallel to the railway. The wide boulevard currently has four lanes of traffic, two of which are bus lanes.

The new layout would see the inside northbound lane closed and turned into 92 pay and display parking spaces, and 14 spaces for disabled blue badge holders. The current southbound lane would be opened to traffic to use in both directions.

Cardiff council is consulting the public on the proposed changes, which would create extra car parking spaces near to the planned indoor arena. Space would also be made for coaches.

A Cardiff council spokesman said: “Altering the use of the road space would create new parking for visitors to Cardiff Bay and the city centre.

“Lloyd George Avenue is usually very quiet, which can result in speeding and other anti-social driving, and the changes would also create a road layout in keeping with the residential environment.”

People interested in the plans can find out more details on the council’s website, and comments should be emailed to [email protected] before April 21.

‘Options’

Speed bumps would also be installed on the road to slow down drivers. Buses would continue to use Lloyd George Avenue, with new bus stops put in place.

In spring 2019, the council consulted the public on building a new cycleway on Lloyd George Avenue. However, two years later, options for the route are “still being looked at”.

A segregated cycle path already exists on the pavement, but cyclists have complained this is sometimes used by drivers to park cars or vans. The cycle path is also broken up by several side roads.

Plans for the proposed new cycleway would have seen the route made safer for pedestrians and cyclists, with zebra crossings over the side roads, and the cycleway relocated away from the flats that line the eastern side of Lloyd George Avenue.

“We are still looking at a variety of options for cycling on this road, and a decision hasn’t been agreed on this scheme yet,” added a council spokesman.
