Machynlleth the first Town Council in Wales to back independence

Machynlleth Town Council has become the first to formally back Welsh independence.

The home of Owain Glyndŵr’s Parliament House held a split vote on Tuesday but following a second vote decided to support Yes Cymru’s campaign.

“We support the idea and recognise that the campaign should exist, as it were,” the clerk Jim Griffiths told Golwg360.

“The council was split fifty-fifty, but then the, Mayor Monica Atkins, declared that she supported independence in a second vote.

“It means that the Council has come to the conclusion that we want to support independence for Wales and Yes Cymru.”

The council was also the first in Wales to recognise that climate change was an emergency, a position now formally supported by the Welsh Government.
