New pro-Remain party decides not to stand and calls for voters to back Plaid Cymru
A new pro-Remain party, the Progressive People’s Party, has announced it is not fielding candidates in the European Elections.
It has instead given its support to Plaid Cymru in the Welsh constituency, saying that the priority was to prevent the pro-EU vote from splitting on 23rd May.
Polls have suggested that Plaid Cymru are the most likely party committed to a second referendum to pick up seats in Wales, which is a single European constituency in the elections.
“We are recommending our supporters, along with supporters of the Lib Dems, Greens, Change UK, Remain Labour and Remain Conservatives, give their pro-EU vote to Plaid Cymru in this election,” says Liz Holmes, the new party’s interim leader.
“We want a positive outcome for Wales, supporting hard-working MEPs who promote the interests of Wales within the European Parliament.
“Voting for experienced MEPs such as Jill Evans of Plaid Cymru, sends a clear message from Wales to the rest of the UK.”
‘Grateful’
The Progressive Peoples’ Party was set up earlier this month by activists and campaigners from several political parties.
The aim, said the founders, was to change the face of British politics by enabling more co-operation and discussion in politics rather than the current two party tribal politics.
Rhun ap Iorwerth AM, Director of Plaid Cymru’s European elections said they were “grateful” for the party’s support.“Plaid Cymru has a clear and consistent policy on Brexit, which is shared by the Peoples’ Party,” he said.
“By uniting behind a single message we can tell the Conservatives, Labour and the Brexit Party what we think of their policies on Europe.
“Working together where there is common cause is the way to shake up the political establishment.
“Voters will help the four nations of the UK retain their place at the heart of European politics by supporting Plaid in this election.”
