A news site has been criticised for “lazy stereotypes” after making ‘sheep shagging’ jokes following the announcement that WWE would be visiting Wales.

Bleeding Cool, which publishes a magazine and news site and has over 6m monthly readers, was reacting to the announcement that WWE would be holding a stadium event at the Principality in Cardiff this September.

“But we’re afraid we’ve got some bad news. Unfortunately, despite the ‘anything goes’ nature of the Extreme Rules PPV concept, Bleeding Cool has learned that sheep will still be prohibited in the stadium,” they said.

“Sorry, Welsh people. You will have to wait until you get home to shag those sheep.”

The article was criticised on social media with one user saying: “Sheep? Really? Bit of a lazy stereotype there Rich.”

Another drew the article to Nation.Cymru‘s attention, saying: “Another day, another ‘sheep shagger’ joke.”

Bleeding Cool, which is owned by independent American comic book publisher Avatar Press, was launched by English journalist Rich Johnston in 2009.

Crime data pubished by the Ministry of Justice in 2020 disproved the myth of the Welsh sheepshagger, showing that 25 people had been convicted of bestiality in England between 2007 and 2016 – but only two in Wales.

They have one “joke” about us, a thousand years old. Which is astounding since they have such great comedians. Perhaps they should have a competition to come up with a new one “England’s Next Great Xenophobic Joke” or something. Hosted by Farage singe he seems pretty desperate for attention. Jim Davidson could be a judge. Is he still alive?

The irony is. Recently we had Ashford Price, secretary of the Welsh Association of Visitor Attractions, say a tourism tax would be , and I quote him. “Anti-English” when have blatant disgusting Anti-Welsh tropes spouted by this alleged magazine with 6M readership seeing the real racism has always been by the English towards us Welsh. Maybe he will retract his comments in light of these comments. Doubt it. Bleeding Cool, or is it, Bleeding Fool, an American rag published by an English journalist Rich Johnston, is vomiting language only the lowest intellect would use. I suggest any journalist from this… Read more »

“Bleeding Tool” perhaps especially if the majority of bestiality offences are committed by English. Deflection is a fairly common technique used by cads and bounders when they fear detection.

“Crime data pubished by the Ministry of Justice in 2020 disproved the myth of the Welsh sheepshagger, showing that 25 people had been convicted of bestiality in England between 2007 and 2016 – but only two in Wales.” However, the population of Wales is 3 million people while the population of England is 55 million, so proportionally, .000001% of Welsh people are sheep shaggers, while just .00000045% of Englishmen are sheep shaggers. Statistically, the Welsh are more likely to shag a sheep than the English. But if we’re really going to talk about who the sheep shaggers are, I think we all… Read more »

I have never seen a sheep in Cardiff, which is not surprising since it is a city. Lazy and boring stereotypes again

Well people in England eat sheep, and our football fans sing we know what we are.

I don’t think this is a stereotype as much as it is a slur.
This isn’t an oversimplified generalisation people actually widely believe, but something they say intentionally to insinuate something insulting and damaging about us as a people. Words matter, we need to label it correctly. We need to be stronger in standing up for ourselves against this sort of bigotry. It isn’t funny, or banter. It’s flagrant xenophobia and it needs to stop. And we are not “thin-skinned” or “humourless” for refusing to help minimise or mitigate the offence by pretending it is “just a joke”.

A National Health study showed that 74 percent of Welshmen have shagged sheep and 34 percent do so regularly.
