No travel between Wales and Tier 3 areas in England, Welsh Government expected to announce

The Welsh Government are expected to announce that there will be restrictions on travelling from Wales to Tier 3 areas of England.

It will be the first time travel over the border for a non-essential purpose has been allowed since the start of Wales’ firebreak lockdown in October.

People will also not be able to travel between Wales and Level 3 or Level 4 areas of Scotland. The whole of Northern Ireland is also restricted.

The new restrictions, due to come into force at 6pm Friday, were revealed in coronavirus regulations published by the Welsh Government.

It means visitors from the Tier 1 and 2 areas of England can now travel into Wales. However, Tier 3 areas include much of the north of England and parts of the south-east of the country.

Tier 2 restrictions in England include avoiding travel to tier 3 of England. But the English regulations do not mention travel to Wales.

Conservative Senedd member Suzy Davies said that Senedd members should not “have to find this info out via Twitter” considering that “the Welsh Parliament met on Wednesday”.

The Welsh Government had said yesterday:  “Travel out of Wales is currently only allowed in limited circumstances, such as for work/education

“In light of England’s lockdown coming to an end, we’re looking at travel restrictions in and out of Wales and will make an announcement later this week,” they said.
