Porthmadog Town Council has become the second in Wales to formally back Welsh independence.

Town Councillor Simon Brooks proposed that the council “declare that it supports independence for Wales”. The proposal was backed by a majority of the other town councillors.

Machynlleth Town Council, in Powys, became the first to formally back Welsh independence in May.

The home of Owain Glyndŵr’s Parliament House held a split vote on the 28th of that month but following a second vote decided to support Yes Cymru’s campaign.

Simon Brooks, who is a candidate to stand for Plaid Cymru in the Dwyfor Meirionnydd Senedd constituency, also called in his motion for Porthmadog to congratulate Machynlleth.

Brooks said that Machynlleth’s declaration had inspired his own proposal.

Simon Brooks said: “It’s a fantastic thing that’s happened, with Porthmadog Town Council declaring for independence tonight.

“I’m so grateful to Machynlleth for showing the way, and now that Porthmadog have declared too, let’s get this ball rolling.

“I know that Ffestiniog Council have it on their agenda for Thursday evening.

“Let’s get all our councils on board, declaring for independence, and showing the world that Welsh independence is the will of the people.”

Blaenau Ffestiniog Town Council will discuss also backing independence on Thursday.
