BBC Radio Cymru has announced that presenter Dewi Llwyd will step down from presenting his Sunday morning show in December.

The station tweeted the news that Dewi, who has been the voice of Sunday mornings for 14 years, will step down from his show ‘Dewi Llwyd ar fore Sul’ but will not disappear from the station entirely and will continue to present other programmes.

Dewi is the son of a Baptist minister and the family moved around before settling in Bangor by the time he was six. He studied in Cardiff, London, Washington, France and Spain before joining the BBC as a parliamentary correspondent in 1980.

He became the presenter for Newyddion when it started out, leaving the programme in 2012, and also hosted the political discussion programme Pawb a’i Farn, on S4C between 1998 and December 2019.

He also presents the Welsh current affairs discussion show Hawl I Holi on BBC Radio Cymru, and he has provided the Welsh language coverage of UK general elections in 2017 and 2019, jointly broadcasting between S4C and BBC Radio Cymru.

Leading the responses to the news this morning, Plaid Cymru’s Sioned Williams MS South West Wales tweeted “Sad to hear Dewi_Llwyd will be quitting his programme on Sunday morning on BBCRadioCymru! So glad to be a small part of this special program from start to finish (almost) reviewing the arts on behalf of the programme. Thanks for everything Dewi and Marian – and enjoy the lie-ins!”

Another commentator on Twitter added: “If Carlsberg were producing programs…they wouldn’t be a patch on the above. As a contributor but more importantly a listener, thank you for taking us along for the ride.”
