Prominent Snowdonia Facebook group fires back at online ‘whispers’ after telling member not to post in Welsh
A prominent Facebook group that told one of its users not to post in Welsh has fired back against “Chinese whispers” online after criticism.
‘Snowdonia Mountain Community – Cymuned Mynydd Eryri’ which has over 10,000 members told one to stop posting in Welsh as it is not “a true international language”.
However, after being criticised by users on the page, many of whom posted in Welsh, they responded with a union jack emoji and the claim that “we never said no to anyone, people can use whatever floats their boat to communicate in our groups. Just remember, we are all one island”.
Snowdonia is in Gwynedd where the majority of the population can speak Welsh according to the most recent published census figures.
But the page had told one user that screenshotted the conversation that it was “created for foreign tourists, mainland UK visitors and locals alike” and that Welsh was “not a true international language and realistically, can never be thought as such”.
The images were then posted to another group and were criticised by other Facebook users.
The page later posted a message saying it was “Putting the origins of the Welsh language in to perspective”.
“It is a myth that Welsh is one of the oldest languages in Europe. This myth came about because Welsh is one of several languages in Europe that was spoken in their current locations before the Romans took over and is still spoken in Wales today,” it posted.
The page was created in 2014 and was originally called Snowdonia Mountain Leader. It generally posts images and messages advertising Snowdonia National Park as a destination.

As one who treks in Eryri 3 or 4 days each week it is so refreshing to have witnessed the higher profile and presence of locals across most outdoir activity landscape settings. The number of Yes Cymru stickers plus flags on cars and homes for certain / but far more making use of their Welsh even if only in greeting form. Welsh is the historic and national treasure of all of us in Cymru
When I worked in London i often heard the “Wales would be a great place if it wasn’t for the Welsh” trope. When I confronted people I just got the “it’s only a joke” response or sometimes it would be the “our taxes are keeping you lot going” line. There’s loads of this stuff out there (Union Jack emoji!)
Only today, my mum went out for a weekly ‘social’ with other senior citizens in town (Leafy Middle England, safe Tory seat etc etc – you get the picture) and I wished her a pleasant time with her ‘playmates’, naturally enough in Cymraeg – as it’s our mother tongue. Anglos lie. They claim ownership of our land and our language and when caught out they double down and lie more. Snow-Dune and Snow-Dunia are NOT theirs to claim. What utter cr#p Snowdonia is not in Gwynedd only as some of it is in Conwy, the village i live in is in Conwy and the parc cenedlaethol Eryri,. Also big Signe in Betws y Coed which is in Conwy saying the gateway to Snowdonia ???
Eryri and historic Gwynedd are historic areas that have covered various areas in and within the north west of Wales. The current county of Gwynedd of course used to cover Ynys Mon and the western half of the what my friend you call Conwy. For hundreds of years Gwynedd covered most of northern Wales.
