Rugby commentator Eddie Butler has backed a Plaid Cymru candidate at the upcoming Senedd election.

He has thrown his support behind John Davies, who is standing for the party in Gower, and said it’s time to “make plans for an independent Wales”.

The 63-year old former Welsh rugby international played his club rugby for Pontypool from 1976–1990 and was capped 16 times for Wales between 1980 and 1984 and scored 2 tries.

Butler has previously spoken at the pro-independence march in Merthyr Tydfil that was organised by All Under One Banner Cymru (AUOB Cymru).

In a video urging people to support John Davies, he said: “This is a very special time. It’s a moment when we can start to dream of a new Wales, make plans for an independent Wales.

“So please vote for John Davies of Plaid Cymru in the election. Plaid Cymru, the party of independence, the party of Wales.”

Jon Davies said: “Such an honour to be endorsed by Eddie Butler, championing myself @ForDavies, @plaidgower & @Plaid_Cymru.

“A more equal, green and prosperous #Wales #indywales #annibyniaeth is in our grasp: let’s seize this chance to make the dream a reality. Ymlaen! A diolch yn fawr Eddie.”

When he spoke at the independence march in Merthyr Tydfil, Eddie Butler said. “I am lucky enough to have been to every corner of Wales, and know that much more binds us together than divides us,”

“I am amazed and dismayed that our spirit of defiance has been confined to the sports field.

“The United Kingdom that made my parents proud to call themselves British no longer exists.

“Out of Westminster what good will be coming the way of Wales? No good.”
