Senedd candidate complains after Facebook bans his anti-mask ad over ‘misinformation’

A Senedd candidate has had his advert banned from Facebook after the site said he was promoting “misinformation”.

James Wells is the Reform Party’s former candidate in Islwyn and briefly represented Wales as an MEP in the European Parliament before Brexit.

He was rebuffed by Facebook after publishing an ad criticising the use of face masks in school.

His Facebook ad said: “#NOMASKINCLASS Welsh Government should either publish the evidence or drop it’s [sic] guidance for masks in class.”

James Wells shared on Twitter that Facebook had rejected the ad, on the basis that “ads must not promote content similar to information that has been identified as misinformation by leading health organisations”.

Reacting on Twitter, James Wells said that “Facebook is stopping us pushing a graphic calling for GOV to publish the evidence on masks in class. US tech companies have too much power!”

The party is however publishing posts arguing against the use of masks in schools on its Facebook page, and urging supporters to email the Education Minister Kirsty Williams if they agree.

The Senedd election will take place on May 6. Reform UK is standing on pledges to ‘fight against more full-scale lockdowns,’ ‘reform the balance of power in Wales’ and ‘working for you and not against you’.
