Social media is “the scourge of our society” according to the Chief Executive of Conwy Council.

At a council meeting this morning, Iwan Davies paid tribute to the late MP Sir David Amess who was killed last Friday at a church hall at Leigh-on-Sea.

Chief executive Mr Davies said his death had rocked the political world and that it was a terrible thing that had happened to a fine family man.

Mr Davies then told councillors he knew many suffered abuse online.

“I know that being an elected member in a council comes with its challenges,” said Mr Davies.

“Social media plays a big part in that, and personally I think it is the scourge of our society at the moment, social media abuse that I know many of you suffer on a regular basis, and I think it is only a matter of time before changes are made to platforms to make the whole of society safer, including, especially in this instance, those people who put themselves forward to represent their electorate.”

He added: “So I thank you from that perspective. I know our monitoring officer has reissued some further advice to you. I suggest you take a look at it and take a moment to reflect on the terrible event last Friday.”

Cllr Abdul Khan was chairing the meeting and thanked council officers for their concern but added: “I think most of us know the risk we take.

“But personally nothing is going to change because we are representing our communities, and most of us are passionate about our community, and it will go on as normal, but I appreciate all the concerns and care that has been expressed. Thank you.”
