Police in the north of Wales have said “this is what we’re up against” after stopping teenagers who had travelled from England to climb a Welsh mountain in the dark in trainers.

Under Welsh Government Alert Level 4 in Wales, the public are expected to stay at home and not travel without a reasonable excuse.

North Wales Police Special Constabulary said that they had stopped the gang of five yesterday.

“Our team continue to come across motorists travelling in breach of COVID regs’,” they said.

“This evening our Special Constabulary road safety unit have reported five people including four teenagers who had travelled from Ellsmere Port to Ogwen Cottage in Snowdonia to climb Tryfan in the dark in trainers!”

North Wales Police Rural Crime Team said the incident “pretty much sums up what we are up against… I would say unbelievable, but not anymore.”

North Wales Police Chief Constable Carl Foulkes said: “Covid regulations in Wales are really clear stay at home and exercise from home this is to protect our NHS and save people’s lives.

“My officers have had to enforce the law repeatedly today because a small minority will not do the right thing.”

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner, Arfon Jones, added: “On the day the number of Covid-19 deaths exceeds 80,000, North Wales Police have turned around 100 cars trying to get to Moel Famau.

“What part of Stay at Home do these selfish people not understand?”
