Tory minister wants ‘the right’ to keep tabs on what Welsh Gov is doing
A Tory minister wants Westminster to have the “right” to keep tabs on what the Welsh Government is going.
David Davies, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales, has complained that the UK Government can’t monitor what Welsh ministers are doing.
He said that Welsh ministers are invited to some British Government meetings so it knows what it’s doing, and can “influence” decisions.
But he added that UK Government ministers don’t have the “same right” to know what’s happening in Wales, which he described as “unfortunate”.
He told the Dros Frecwast programme on BBC Radio Cymru: “We’d like to have a closer relationship with the Welsh Government and we’ve made that clear several times.
“The relationships between ministers is fine behind the scenes – I spoke with Vaughan Gething [Economy Minister] yesterday.
“We want to work with the Welsh Government, and we’ve made that very clear.
“At the moment, the Welsh Government joins with the United Kingdom Government in things such as Cobra meetings, therefore they know what’s coming out of the British Government.
“They can influence our decisions through these meetings. But at the moment, we don’t have the same right to know what ministers in the Welsh Government are doing.
“And that is unfortunate because we want to have a better relationship with them, and we have invited them in to ensure they have information on what the British Government is deciding.”
‘Work with’
A spokesperson for the Welsh Government told Golwg360: “We work with the United Kingdom Government on a series of issues that are important to Wales.
“However, the United Kingdom Government has to respect devolution and the role of the Welsh Government.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, Welsh businesses have benefited from using Welsh solutions, which have been developed and built with support from the United Kingdom Government.
“Our commitment to Welsh businesses and aiding inward investment is clear.
“Figures released this week have shown that Wales was the only country in the United Kingdom to see an increase in the number of inward investment projects over the last year.
“That safeguards 7,000 jobs, thanks to direct support from the Welsh Government.”

Absolutely. There seem to constant new ploys to chip away at the efficacy of devolved government in Wales, and this latest must be resisted firmly and knocked on the head quickly. Curiously, I hear no mention of any attempt to have a presence in the Scottish Parliament.
Davies should crawl back into his shell.
