Tory MP insists he’s not ‘speaking through his hat’ as he bemoans Wales having different laws to England
A Tory MP has insisted he’s not “speaking through his hat” as he bemoaned Wales having different laws England.
Daniel Kawczynski, who represents Shrewsbury, hit out at “divergence” between Cardiff and London, which he claimed has “magnified beyond all previous understanding during this pandemic”.
He was speaking on Rich Politics, a YouTube channel by former Abolish the Welsh Assembly Candidate Richard Taylor, when he made the comments.
He was asked by Taylor if devolution is a “threat” to the union, to which he replied: “Well this is the question I really came on your show for.
“So, I’ve represented a border community for 16 years and my experience over the last 16 years, I’m not speaking as a fresh new Tory MP who’s just been parachuted into the seat, who is speaking through his hat.
“I’m speaking as an English Member of Parliament, and by the way I’m British because I was born Poland.
“So, I’m neither English nor am I Welsh. I’m British and there are millions of us who don’t consider ourselves to be English or Welsh or Scottish. We consider ourselves to be British.
“Having represented the community and seeing as Cardiff and London since 1997 have started to diverge, and as the speed of that divergence quickened and as it has magnified beyond all previous understanding during this pandemic then I see, if you get two sides pulling apart it’s the thing in the middle that sees the tension, and where it rips.
“It doesn’t rip on either side, it rips in the middle and this, the border communities who are at the coalface of experiencing additional difficulties as a result of this increasing divergence between Cardiff and London.

In some ways it’s nice that the worst of British/English politics and the worst of Welsh politics can find each other. Reminds us that there is someone out there for everyone.

Not being born in the UK doesn’t disqualify you from being English, Scottish, Welsh ot Northern Irish.
Furthermore if he and others who think like him are not comfortable with being branded English, then what has that got to do with us in Wales? I want us to have the maximum devolution as well and to reserve the right to call Wales my country with pride. Its not my problem if people from across the border have an issue with their identity.
Tories believe they talk for everyone but don’t! They’ve been soundly rejected by the Scottish electorate since 1955 !

I wonder if Mr Kaczyński longs for the day when the top left of Poland was run from Berlin, the top right from St Petersburg and the bottom right from Vienna?
Like most other nations, there are Poles, a minority probably, who would be quite content to return to the glory days of the Russian Empire, Soviet domination, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and even the good old Third Reich. Bit like the soggy brained Unionists that inhabit most parts of Wales craving GSTQ and that flag !.
They also have different laws to every other country on the planet, so should every country in the world be controlled by one central government? Idiot.
The ‘British’ are the enemy of England, Alba and Cymru. The English will be much better off when their majority realise that they have a Bill Of Rights. Should we draw on it?

So there’s a border, so what? Most countries in the world have a land border but they don’t demand the right to interfere in the affairs of their neighbours and when they do it tends to end badly with this thing called a ‘war’. Being of Polish descent he of all people should understand this, unless of course he is pig-ignorant of history which wouldn’t surprise me.
It’s easy and mistaken to dismiss the opinions of folk like the member for Shrewsbury but there is no doubt that he does reflect a strand of opinion in society across the nations of these Islands.
England 🏴 – he seems a touch embarrassed about….and Wales 🏴which he sees as an extension of that great county of Montgomeryshire.or perhaps our Pomerania ….drawing from the old country’s’ treatment of western seaside provincial minorities doubt shape his thoughts….
England has much to offer and he perhaps needs to value more the nation that accepted him….

This man is a weird combination of arrogance, ignorance and petulance. He really needs to refrain from sticking his fork in other people’s dinner and accept that contemporary Wales bears no resemblance to his anodine interpretation of the country.
He probably couldn’t find a hat big enough for his head.
The recent £800,000 re-furbishment of Shrewsbury station was payed for mainly out of the Arriva Trains Wales budget. Some questioned whether it was a good idea that what was effectively Welsh money was being spent in England. I personally have no objection as it is an important part of the Welsh network. I wonder if the town’s honourable member has ever mentioned it in his perennial anti Welsh government ramblings?
