A Tory MP has said she wants to promote a “global Britain agenda” in her new role in the Foreign Office.

Sarah Atherton, who represents Wrexham has been appointed as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the department in Boris Johnson’s reshuffle.

A Parliamentary Private Secretary is appointed by a minister to be his or her assistant, and the role is seen as the first rung on the ladder for a backbench MP who wants to become involved in the running of the government.

Atherton has moved from the Welsh Office where she was also Parliamentary Private Secretary. She has been replaced in that role by Ynys Mon MP Virginia Crosbie.

Sarah Atherton said: “Pleased to have been made Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) – a junior Ministerial position – to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and Government Equalities Office.

“This means, alongside my work representing Wrexham, I will now be working with the Secretary of State & FCDO Ministers to promote and develop our global Britain agenda, whilst also forwarding this Government’s equalities policy.

“I look forward to meeting with the Secretary of State Liz Truss when she is back from her first trip as Foreign Secretary in due course.”

Can you hear that sound? That’s the sound of cosmic laughter…there is laughter at the appointment and there is laughter at the statement: “This means, alongside my work representing Wrexham, I will now be working with the Secretary of State & FCDO Ministers to promote and develop our global Britain agenda, whilst also forwarding this Government’s equalities policy.” its rank disingenuousness and blatant hypocrisy with talk of an “equalities policy” from a minister that voted against feeding children, a former nurse that voted aginst a decent pay-rises for nurses and NHS staff. The heavens laugh long and hard about this,… Read more »

A PPS is not a member of the government and is the unpaid eyes and ears of the minister. So when she says this is ‘a junior ministerial position’ this is not true.
