Tory Senedd candidate would ‘narrowly’ prefer Welsh independence to ‘torture’

A Tory Senedd candidate has said that he would “narrowly” prefer Wales to be an independent nation than to be tortured.

Former Big Brother contestant, and Welsh Conservative Senedd candidate for Cardiff North, Joel Williams, revealed that given the choice between “an eternity of punitive suffering and torture”, and Wales having control of its own laws, that on balance, he would plump for the latter.

The Councillor for Pontprennau and Old St Mellons on Cardiff Council has previously said that he is worried about the rise in support for Welsh independence.

A recent ITV opinion poll, in collaboration with Savanta ComRes, has shown the highest support for independence ever recorded with 39 per cent of Welsh people saying they would now vote ‘yes’ in a referendum.

The candidate shared the scenario in which he would choose Welsh independence with Darren Donovan, a supporter of the grassroots pro-independence group YesCymru, on Twitter.

Donovan said: “Had a letter in the post today from @JoelTory. Sorry Joel not a chance in hell.”

Joel Williams replied: “That’s a shame. If I was asked to choose between an eternity of punitive suffering and torture or an independent Wales I’d narrowly choose an independent Wales.”

Donovan then said: “Joel wants Indy #indyWales #Annibyniaeth.”

Meilyr Morgan told the candidate: “There’s hope for you yet!”

Gareth John McCann said: “Eternity of suffering is Wales has been doing under Westminster government for centuries.
