Tributes paid to Welsh media producer Idris Charles who passed away aged 74
The Welsh entertainer and television producer Idris Charles has passed away at the age of 74.
Tributes have poured in for the Welsh language media stalwart who was a familiar voice on Radio Cymru as the presenter of ‘Idris ar y Sul’ and ‘Chadair Idris’.
Originally from Ynys Mon, he was the son of actor and entertainer Charles Williams.
He was regularly a commentator on football matches on Radio Cymru and he produced and directed the Wedi 7 programme for Tinopolis on S4C.
TV producer Angharad Mair said: “So sad to hear that Idris Charles has left us. A great entertainer, and lovely man. One of the best to work with us on HenoS4C – so enthusiastic, incredibly passionate and knew his audience better than anyone. A big loss, big condolences to his family.”
The TV presenter Elin Fflur said: “Very sad news about Idris Charles. A lovely man, always full of fun, and understood entertainment brilliantly. It was a privilege to work with him on @HenoS4C. He was so supportive to me throughout my career. One of the best lads from Mon. It will miss the friendliness. Thinking about all the family.”
The Welsh comedian Tudur Owen said: “Sad news about Idris Charles. Mon has lost one of its sons. Always supportive and never critical. Thank you for your support over the years my old friend.”
Radio presenter Terwyn Davies said: “Thank you Idris Charles for the privilege of co-presenting with you. Happy days and I learned a lot in your company.”
‘Passion’
Amanda Rees, S4C Director of Content, told Cymru Fyw: “Wales has lost a character who was full of passion for the people of his country and who understood what a good story was that was able to catch the viewers’ imagination.
“Idris Charles was a man with a variety of talents, and he displayed them on television and radio by presenting, acting, producing, directing, filming and commentating on the playing field.
“Everything he produced for S4C, for HTV production teams, Tinopolis, and other independent producers, aimed at providing popular entertainment at a high standard.
“His passing is a loss to viewers, listeners and people in the creative industries.
During the 60s and 70s he organised the ‘Ser Cymru’ entertainment nights at the Majestic Cinema in Caernarfon.
In 1983 he became an assistant producer at HTV Cymru where he scripted a number of light entertainment shows.
