UKIP ‘Abolish the Assembly’ speech abandoned after only three people turn up

The leader of Welsh UKIP abandoned a talk on why the Welsh Assembly should be abolished after “only three people turned up”.

Gareth Bennett had been due to speak at the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University ‘on the case for abolishing the Welsh Assembly’ between 7-9pm today.

The group ‘Yes Cymru Myfyrwyr’, students who campaign for Welsh Independence, greeted Garreth Bannett and filmed him leaving shortly afterwards without making his speech.

They said that only three people attended to hear the speech.

UKIP’s ruling body agreed to campaign against devolution in Wales on Monday, calling for a poll on the future of the National Assembly for Wales.

Gareth Bennett, UKIP’s assembly leader, was elected last summer on an anti-devolution platform.

The BBC’s annual St. David’s Day at the beginning of the month suggested that only 13% of respondents wanted the Assembly abolished, and 3% wanted powers taken away.

27% wanted to keep the status quo, 46% wanted greater powers and 7% independence.
