Union has been ‘doomed for over a century’ says historian who predicted Brexit

The union has been “doomed for over a century” according to a historian who predicted Brexit.

Dr James Hawes suggested that the “tipping point” for the collapse of the UK will come more quickly than expected.

The bestselling author, whose satirical novel Speak For England, published in 2005, won praise for foreshadowing the rise of Nigel Farage and Brexit, added that it will be because of something which initially appears “quite small”.

Dr Hawes made the comments while speaking in an interview with Sunday National columnist John Drummond on Independence Live’s TNT: The Nation Talks show last week.

He said: “The USSR collapsed, the British Empire collapsed for crying out loud.

“When my mother was born, we still owned India and half of Africa. All that has gone so why should not the UK and GB go too?

“My contention essentially is the UK is not only doomed, but it has been doomed for over a century.

“In a sense one of my prize exhibits in the book is none other than Winston Churchill, who in 1912 was MP for Dundee at that stage, trying to hold his beloved UK together.

“He put his finger on the fact that the force that was going to blow it apart was actually England.

“The dominance of the southern part of England within England and its refusal to let go would make impossible his dream.”

‘Fascinating’

He said how the collapse of the UK will happen was a “fascinating question”.

“I believe it will come more quickly than we now expect and that the immediate cause of that will be something which appears quite small initially and is certainly impossible to predict,” he said.

“When I was at university in Ireland in my first job as a lecturer of German studies, half my colleagues there were experts in East German literature and culture.

“And none of use foresaw in the summer of 1989 that within a year, Germany would be completely united again. We thought it was completely impossible.”

What is the UK ? The original empire, the English empire. Now that is ending too. The empire was and still is a very centralised and controlling entity and that is why it won’t last.

“…something that appears quite small”. Johnson’s level of statesmanship and intra-UK diplomacy, possibly?

Maybe the cause will be the internal market bill, the bill designed to make the devolved countries comply to Westminster’s wishes.

The British Union will die because it’s never really been a Union of Equals. Even today one nation is dominant and it’s centrist Conservative government continually throwing its weight around, who has motto. One English size fits all. You can’t keep together a false Union. In 1282 Wales was invaded and the Iron Ring began. Over 600 castles were constructed to demoralise & subdue the native Welsh. Divide & Conqeur. Until Act of Union Wales of 1535 & 1542 had Royal Assent resulting in the annexation and the ethic & linguistic cleansing of Wales & Welsh. This was no marriage… Read more »

The Conservative Party, those champions of government staying out of the way, letting markets, businesses and people do their thing, can’t seem to find the stones to allow that to happen with the nations of these isles in their maintenance of familial, cultural and untold other connections and shared tenets. Their centralising tendencies are as USSR as it comes.

It’s a flawed concept by virtue of the fact England is enormously large compared to the other three members. Quelle surprise, the state is run in its interests. Federalise, to try and redress the balance, and thereby balkanise England, and it will go down like a fart in church. The other alternative is to deny our own respective nationhoods as subsumed within ‘Britishness’. Four independent states, in a confederation perhaps, with a federal England. There we go. I don’t even have any formal training in politics and I solved that conundrum.

Why do they still invoke ‘The War’? Because apart from scare stories, they know they have no other cards to play.
