Wales Office spends £350 to fly England flag

The Secretary of State for Wales spent £350 of taxpayers’ money to fly the English flag during the FIFA World Cup, an FOI request has revealed.

The information was obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by a Welsh football fan group calling themselves the Spirit of 942.

The Welsh flag was replaced by the England flag on 28^th of June 2018 at a cost of £175, and was then put back in the early hours of the 29^th of June 2018 at a further cost of £175, totaling £350. During this period, the Wales Office was left flying a Union Jack and a St George’s Cross, but no Welsh flag.

A spokesperson for the Spirit of 942 said:

“£350 to put up a flag is obscene. The fact that it was taxpayers’ money, for a flag that has nothing to do with our country, and particularly that it replaced the Welsh flag, makes the whole affair typical of an office that continues to be exposed for its incompetence.

“You would have thought that a man with such disdain for his own country would have jumped at the chance to take down the Welsh flag himself, without having to spend taxpayers’ money paying someone else to do it.

“The so-called Secretary of State for Wales seems intent on doing everything possible to erase Wales as an entity in every possible sphere.
