Wales has now overtaken Israel for the percentage of its total population given at least one jab against Covid-19, moving into second place worldwide.

63.1% of Wales’ total population has now been given one vaccine dose. This is a bigger proportion than Israel, which stands at 62.8%.

The proportion who have had the second jab in Israel, and been fully vaccinated, is however higher at 56%. Public Health Wales (PHW) figures show 891,569 people have had a second jab, which is 28.3% of the population.

Seychelles has the highest percentage of its population given at least one jab in the world at 70%, with 62% fully vaccinated, according to the latest statistics.

The U.A.E. say that they have vaccinated 72% of the eligible adult population but do not provide a breakdown of figures for first and second doses or the percentage of the total population vaccinated, so cannot be compared with Wales and Israel.

Wales is also in the lead per population across the UK. England has given first doses to 53.2% of its population, Scotland 54.3% and Northern Ireland 52.2%.

First Minister Mark Drakeford stated earlier that Wales would hit two million doses administered over the weekend. For the most recent day, 14,963 people received first doses and 13,813 had second doses.

He described it as a “truly incredible” achievement, adding that Wales has one of the best vaccination rates in the world.

“Over the next few weeks, we will accelerate still further our programme of first dose vaccinations, as other parts of the UK make progress towards the levels of second doses we have already provided in Wales,” he said.

“We remain on target to offer all eligible adults vaccination by mid-July. If vaccine supply allows us to move faster then we will.”

Well in fairness, Israel is trying to cope with vaccination AND carry out military attacks on Palestinians. They were bound to drop a few spots

Very reassuring, but honestly this is NOT a race. Getting everybody through a process in an organised fashion is the name of the game. Some countries are at an economic disadvantage, others are victims of their own difficult geography, worst off of all are those ruled by demented Covid deniers.

When Wales was behind the rest of the UK in January the English media were very keen to report that fact and Drakeford was criticised for saying that it wasn’t a race. Now that Wales are ahead of England the English media are very quiet about it and very keen to point out that it isn’t a race. Funny that.
